Anxiety

Anxiety Can Be Overwhelming. Our Drug-free, Noninvasive Treatment can Help.

Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in the United States. In fact, the National Institutes of Health reports that 19.1% of US adults have experienced an anxiety disorder in the last year. And 31% will have an anxiety disorder in their lifetime.

So if you’re experiencing anxiety that won’t go away, realize that you’re not alone. And yes, many treatments exist for anxiety. However, sometimes they don’t work, or the medications cause side effects you can’t handle. Then you can feel stuck with the constant worry, the sleepless nights, and the panic attacks that seem to come out of nowhere.

But you don’t have to keep feeling that way. At Synapse Hawaii, we offer a new approach to treating anxiety disorders. This non-invasive, drug-free treatment is called MeRT or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy.

MeRT uses advanced diagnostics and technology in order to treat even the most severe anxiety symptoms. It’s gentle, effective, and can achieve lasting results.*

* Results are based on active and strict observation of our regimens. Results may vary based on the individual user and are not guaranteed.

What is MeRT Treatment for Anxiety?

anxietyMeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, combines two procedures: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG).

The EEG is key to the success of the MeRT treatment. That’s because patients with anxiety have markers we can see in their EEG studies. The EEG can show an imbalance in brainwave activity. Once we identify that imbalance, we can then strengthen the brainwave activity. As a result, this can reduce anxiety symptoms.

Your EEG is unique to you. We use YOUR EEG results to guide treatment exactly where it’s needed to ensure the best possible results. That’s why MeRT has been successfully used to treat anxiety, particularly when medications haven’t helped or have caused complex side effects.

MeRT treatment can result in a substantial, long-lasting reduction of anxiety symptoms.*

* Results are based on active and strict observation of our regimens. Results may vary based on the individual user and are not guaranteed.

What are Anxiety Disorders?

anxietyWhile we all experience anxiety from time to time in life. That’s normal. An anxiety disorder, however, is quite different. That’s because the anxiety you experience won’t go away. It’s intense and can come on when you don’t expect it. And the worry and fear won’t go away.

Anxiety disorders can include panic attacks, those sudden feelings of anxiety that cause heart palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, and more. They can be so severe that you end up in the emergency room.

You can also experience General Anxiety Disorder, which is an excessive worry about “ordinary” life experiences. This worry can be constant, and it can rule your life.

These are just two of the many types of anxiety disorders, which can also include agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, and even anxiety disorder brought on by a medical condition. And unfortunately, nobody fully knows what causes anxiety disorders. However, they can be triggered by certain traumatic life events. They can also be inherited, or a side effect of certain medications.

Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Following are some of the common signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders:

anxiety

  • Hyperventilation or shortness of breath

If you’re experiencing anxiety disorder symptoms that won’t resolve, know that there is hope.

MeRT Treatment for Anxiety at Synapse Hawaii: What to Expect

MeRT is a treatment that has only been around since 2011, so you may have many questions about whether it’s the right treatment for your anxiety. We understand, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for you to get the information you need. We also know that this is not a light decision to make.

Your first step is as simple as a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. During this consultation, you can discuss symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want, and have her explain the treatment in full. This includes all fees and protocols.

Then, once you decide to take the next step, we then set up two separate appointments. Each of these appointments will last 45 minutes to an hour. We then have an assessment period where the actual procedure and monitoring take place.

EEG Testing

At your first appointment, we will perform the qEEG and ECG/EKG. These tests are simple and painless, and you receive them right in our office. For the EEG, we place a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain. This will map out any areas which are not performing as they should. Additionally, with the EKG, we attach electrodes to your chest in order to record your heart’s electrical signals.

Once we perform the tests, our team will carefully analyze the results. Based on this analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition. We then schedule your assessment period of treatment.

Consultation

Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Yim. You can do this either in person or virtually from the comfort of your home. We will discuss your test results and treatment protocols and answer your questions. We’ll also let you know more about what to expect during your assessment period.

Assessment Period

In this step, we will perform a short period of treatment (usually two weeks), followed by a new EEG to see how you’re responding. We also look at symptom improvements.

If you respond positively to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements. At that point, we will schedule more MeRT treatments in two-week intervals.

Continuing Treatment

At the end of every two weeks, we will perform a new qEEG/EKG to monitor your progress. You’ll also have a consultation to confirm that changes are still showing on the testing.

Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable and long-lasting results after four to eight weeks of treatment. However, each patient is different, and your results may vary.
