What is MeRT?
MeRT stands for Magnetic Resonance Therapy. In simple terms, MeRT employs the use of noninvasive magnetic waves directed at specific areas of the brain that are not communicating or connecting as they should, to gently stimulate those regions. We use thorough diagnostics to isolate exactly what is happening in each patient’s brain. We then develop a customized treatment plan to stimulate and “wake up” regions of the brain affected by a variety of neurological conditions. And we have seen a vast array of benefits, improvements, and in many cases miraculous achievements.
The neurons in the brain can be disrupted by many different factors.
The behavior between your neurons can be adversely affected by factors such as:
- An injury to the head or repeated injuries
- Chemical exposure
- Addiction
- Disease or illness
- Developmental disorders such as Autism, Learning disorders, ADD, ADHD
- Extreme stress, anxiety, or trauma
- Congenital conditions
These disruptions can be significant or minor. One’s threshold of tolerance varies from individual to individual. Some people are still able to function in their day-to-day activities, while others have no quality of life. But what is truly incredible is that with a little gentle stimulation in the right direction, we can improve brain function.
The MeRT Process
There are many studies that have shown that there are altered brain wave oscillations in patients suffering from neurological conditions such as Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism, ADHD, and others.
Through sophisticated imaging, diagnostics, and analysis of your brainwave activity, we are able to identify disruptions to your brain network and build treatment parameters specifically tailored for each patient. In most cases, we are able to visibly reshape brainwave activity, regardless of what may have caused the disruption to begin with.
The MeRT platform is a patent-protected process that has been undergoing rigorous research by the Department of Defense and several private institutions for years now, with great success.

MeRT: Conditions Treated – Autism
Synapse offers MeRT treatment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Every child is unique and no two cases of Autism are the same. Symptoms can vary as well as severity levels. Even if a child is on a similar “level” as another, they will still have their own unique symptoms, ways of communicating and dealing with the outside world, and their own unique symptoms.
In some cases, Autism can affect intelligence levels. However, some with Autism can have a very high IQ. Even a child with high intelligence, social skills, and common sense, may still have difficulties in their ability to communicate and deal with the world around them.
We customize MeRT treatment protocols for each patient as we work to help restore brain function to a more optimal degree. Every patient has a different starting point based on their imaging and diagnostics and where they are on the spectrum. But no matter where they start, we generally see improvements soon after treatment starts. *
MeRT technology works by utilizing magnetic fields to neuromodulate brain waves. This optimizes brain communication which helps it to be more organized and in sync. This allows the child to be higher functioning, and in most cases, to have better communication skills, social skills, and more independence. This allows for improved quality of life for both the patient and their loved ones.
*Results can vary from patient to patient

MeRT: Conditions Treated – Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion
Synapse offers MeRT treatment for patients who have experienced traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and concussions.
In essence, we use magnetic fields to gently stimulate and balance brain function, guided by sophisticated diagnostics and imaging.
Those with a concussion or Traumatic Brain Injury may continue to have effects long after the initial incident, and some may never fully recover. MeRT can be used as a vital part of treatment to stimulate and help the brain to heal, improving brain communication and connectivity. In many cases, this has helped greatly in improving recovery results.
See some of the RESEARCH STUDIES.
Individuals who have suffered a concussion or brain injury will have specific markers that are visible in their EEG studies. Research has shown that:
People who have experienced a traumatic brain injury will have a higher power in their delta band frequencies and lower power in the alpha bands. What this means is that parts of your brain that were injured may be ‘asleep.’ MeRT can help to ‘wake up’ these areas of the brain again.”
Many individuals who have suffered a traumatic brain injury also often go through additional therapies to assist them in regaining function. We can use MeRT in conjunction with these therapies. MeRT: Conditions Treated – ADHD
Here at Synapse, Hawaii’s Brain Treatment Center, Dr. Yim and his staff offer MeRT for ADHD.
In a person with ADHD, the activity and connectivity of the brain networks are somewhat impaired. When inspected more closely, the communication between these networks we find that the release of important chemicals, dopamine, and noradrenaline, are also found to be disrupted. These chemicals are responsible for relaying messages between brain cells. As a result, when children with ADHD carry out tasks, some networks are not switched on enough while others are switched on too much.
Numerous research studies have shown that there are widespread differences in the development and function of the brain in children with ADHD.
Each patient’s initial testings are analyzed very carefully as to the brain’s pattern of function and activity. Through this detailed analysis, we are able to determine the correct neural synchronization. This information is then used to devise a highly personalized protocol for each patient, with the purpose of encouraging improved brain communication. Patients have indicated that they have experienced significant clinical improvements.*
Treatment for ADHD usually lasts 4-8 weeks. Appointments are 30-45 minutes in length, Monday through Friday. Generally, the patient will begin to notice improvements during the first week.
Research studies and patients are showing that this type of treatment is promising for ADHD.*
MeRT: Conditions Treated – Depression
Dr. Yim and the staff at Synapse offer MeRT treatment for Depression.
The equipment used in the MeRT treatment protocols is FDA-cleared for the treatment of Depression. This non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive treatment has been successfully used to treat depression, particularly when medications haven’t helped or have caused complex side effects.
According to the Mayo Clinic, more than three million people are diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder every year. They also report on new research that shows how the altered activity of certain neural circuits in the brain may contribute to depression.
The EEG is key to the success of the MeRT treatment. That’s because patients who are clinically depressed have markers that we can see in their EEG studies. The EEG can show an imbalance in brainwave activity. Once we identify that imbalance, we can then strengthen the brainwave activity. As a result, this can reduce depression symptoms.

MeRT: Conditions Treated – Dementia
Synapse offers MeRT treatment for Dementia and Cognitive Decline.
While dementia isn’t a disease in and of itself, it is a set of symptoms with various underlying causes. Symptoms of dementia can vary from person to person and can worsen over time. Regardless of the cause, it affects thinking, memory, perceptions, independence and can grossly disrupt daily life. As dementia worsens, full-time care is often required.
MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective approach to symptom relief for those with dementia or cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s Disease. Simply stated, MeRT uses a magnetic field to stimulate and balance brain function, guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics. In this way, MeRT may be able to help patients with progressive forms of cognitive decline or dementia from progressing further.
As a note, it’s important to receive clearance from your physician before undergoing this therapy, and follow-up sessions may be required to maintain results. To find out more about how Synapse uses MeRT in the treatment of Dementia, click here.

Dr. Yim, one of Honolulu’s top Pediatric Neurologists, has brought this state-of-the-art technology called MeRT to Honolulu, Hawaii, and surrounding areas. MeRT, which stands for Magnetic Resonance Therapy, is a non-invasive, painless and drug-free treatment that is used to address dysregulation in the brain by neuromodulating the electrical signals, thereby stimulating and reorganizing brain function.
The equipment used in the MeRT technology has been FDA-cleared and this therapy is being successfully used to treat an array of neurological conditions. As the benefits of MeRT are all-encompassing, this treatment has also been used very successfully for brain optimization!
How to determine…
Is MeRT the Right Treatment?
Reading this, you may be interested but uncertain if MeRT is the right treatment for you or your child. However, this is not something you need to decide right away, as you have many steps to take before making a much more informed decision.
Your first step is a simple one: A phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator, where you can ask all the questions you want and discuss your symptoms and history. She will also explain the protocols, fees, and details of treatment.
The next step is also simple and consists of two appointments. At your first appointment, we will perform an EEG, a completely painless and non-invasive brain scan. This takes about 45 minutes. Then, your second appointment will be a consultation with the doctor. This happens several days later, once we have analyzed the results of your EEG.
At this one-on-one consultation, the doctor will discuss the results of the imaging and diagnostics and what may or may not be treatable with MeRT. He will also answer any questions you may have, so together you can determine if MeRT would be beneficial and what the treatment would entail.
If you and the doctor then decide to move forward with MeRT, we conduct an Assessment Period. This is a short period of treatment followed by a new EEG to see if you are responding well. We assess this based on the new EEG results compared to the testing done at the start of treatment, as well as any symptom improvements.
If you have a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have most likely seen symptom improvements starting to take place. At that point, we can schedule for the additional treatment duration.
