Depression

Suffering from Depression Despite Therapy and Meds? This Breakthrough Treatment Can Help!

MeRT doesn’t involve medications, it’s non-invasive, and it’s getting some incredible, life-changing results.

MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is FDA-cleared for Depression and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

Chronic Depression Can Be Unbearable. But There IS Hope.

depression

When you’re dealing with depression, it can feel like you’re living life in a fog. Because you’re depressed, it’s all you can do to get through the day. And nobody seems to understand how tough things are.
There are many ways to treat depression, including therapy and medications. And while these can all be effective, often you can try multiple types of medications with no lasting change. or maybe you’d prefer not to take antidepressants.
We understand. And we know how hard it can be. After all, we’ve seen first-hand how depression affects people. To that end, we’re dedicated to providing relief from that depression. We want you to live the best possible life.
At Synapse, we offer a new and different approach to treating depression. It’s called MeRT or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. It’s non-invasive, drug-free, and lasting. And it’s been used successfully to treat depression, particularly when medications haven’t helped or have caused complex side effects.
So yes, depression can be hard to deal with, and even harder to treat. But you may have found the solution.

What is MeRT Treatment for Depression?

MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, combines three procedures:

  1. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation(TMS, an FDA cleared therapy),
  2. Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and
  3. Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG).

The EEG is key to the success of the MeRT treatment. That’s because patients who are clinically depressed have markers that we can see in their EEG studies. The EEG can show an imbalance in brainwave activity. Once we identify that imbalance, we can then strengthen the brainwave activity. As a result, this can reduce depression symptoms.

Your EEG is unique to you. We use YOUR EEG results to guide treatment exactly where it’s needed to ensure the best possible results.

According to the Mayo Clinic, more than three million people are diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder every year. They also report on new research that shows how the altered activity of certain neural circuits in the brain may contribute to depression.

So you can see why MeRT has been successfully used to treat depression, particularly when medications haven’t helped or have caused complex side effects. And as we have mentioned, MeRT is FDA-approved for Multiple Drug Resistant Depression.

We hope this helps you understand the MeRT treatment plan better. MeRT is highly individualized for each person, and as a result, many patients have been able to go off their medications for depression.

“Everyone experiences their world a little bit differently.”

Dr. Erik Won, President & Chief Medical Officer at Wave Neuroscience

“EEGs (electrical pictures of the brain) can tell us when there are abnormalities in neural networks. … And we run that data through a normative database, and we can see, for example, if somebody has an area in the left prefrontal cortex that’s cycling at two Hertz — which means that they may be only processing information two times per second — whereas the rest of their brain may be cycling 11 times per second. That information mismatch may manifest for somebody who has depression. They may lack motivation, feel lethargic, not want to get out of bed.”

But in a different scenario… let’s say it is the visual cortex that’s cycling now at 30 times per second. If you’re scanning your environment 30 times per second, but [are] only able to process it 10 or 11 times per second, this information overload may manifest as anxiety. And it’s not a one-to-one correlation. Everyone experiences their world a little bit differently.

We can look at these signals and find areas that are abnormal, [then we] use this FDA cleared technology, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, to navigate to the area that’s not working properly and try to stimulate it and remind it that it wants to fire at a certain frequency and a certain rate.”

– Dr. Erik Won, President of Wave Neuroscience, from his appearance on the Broken Brain podcast

Depression Can Be Debilitating

Depression can be a serious illness, taking many forms. For example, a one-time situation, such as the death of a loved one, may result in acute depression. This type of acute depression can also happen after physical or emotional trauma. Chronic depression, on the other hand, can have unknown causes—yet can completely sideline your life.

Whether acute or chronic, depression is not to be taken lightly. In the first place, it makes certain days almost impossible to get through. Then there are the most severe cases, which can cause suicidal feelings. Suicide is currently the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, with up to 7.4% of teens between grades 9-12 reporting that they had attempted suicide at least once in the last twelve months.

That’s why getting the right kind of help for depression can truly be a matter of life and death. If you are feeling suicidal, please call 911. You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).

How to Find Out More About Depression Treatment with MeRT

MeRT is a relatively new treatment, so you may have many questions as to whether it’s the right treatment for your depression. We understand, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for you to get the information you need. We also know that this is not a light decision to make.

Your first step is as simple as a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. You can discuss symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want, and have her explain the treatment in full. This includes all fees and protocols.

MeRT Treatment for Depression: What to Expect

Once you decide to take the next step, we then set up two separate appointments. Each of these appointments will last 45 minutes to an hour. After this, we have an assessment period where the actual procedure and monitoring take place.

EEG Testing

On your first appointment, we perform the qEEG and ECG/EKG. These tests are simple and painless and done right in our office. For the EEG, we place a cap on your head to measure the electrical activity in your brain. This will map out any areas which are not performing as they should. Additionally, with the EKG, we attach electrodes to your chest to record your heart’s electrical signals.

Once we perform the tests, our team will carefully analyze the results. Based on this analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition. We then schedule your assessment period of treatment.

Consultation

Your second appointment, after your qEEG/EKG, is a one-on-one consultation. You can do this either in person or virtually from the comfort of your home. We will discuss your test results and treatment protocols, and answer any questions you may have. We’ll also let you know more about what to expect during your assessment period.

Assessment Period

In this step, we will perform a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG to see how you’re responding. We also look at symptom improvements.

If you respond positively to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements starting to take place. At that point, we will schedule more MeRT treatment in two-week intervals.

At the end of every two weeks, we will perform a qEEG/EKG to monitor your progress. You’ll also have a consultation to confirm that changes are still showing on the testing.

Most conditions treated with MeRT provide noticeable and long-lasting results after four to eight weeks of treatment. However, each patient is different, and your results may vary.
