More on COVID After Care
“Long Haul COVID” can affect people in different ways, including both neurologically and psychologically. The term, “Long COVID” came into use to describe what so many people were going through, and doctors and experts refer to as after effects as post-acute sequelae, or PASC. After six months, the most common ongoing serious symptoms are cognitive dysfunction, fatigue, and general malaise with lost stamina. For persons hospitalized, after-effects can be worse.
Other symptoms reported have included:
- Itchy skin
- Heart palpitations
- Tremors
- Sexual dysfunction
- Tinnitus
- Bladder control issues
- Blurred vision
- Memory loss
Mental Illness on the Rise
The pandemic has created a substantial rise in mental illness as well. Prolonged periods of isolation alone have created more depression and anxiety than ever before. People who were already dealing with mental illnesses have found that they are greatly exacerbated or no longer controllable by medications.
“People are under enormous stress, and chronically depressed individuals who have done well with medications in the past are finding that their symptoms are more difficult to manage,” says Andrew Leuchter, MD, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences with the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Behavior at UCLA.
All of These Factors Have Sparked Interest in Neuromodulation, Which is Non-pharmaceutical and Non-invasive
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created an unprecedented global health challenge. There is risk that the outbreak will create a “second pandemic” of mental health crises in health systems and communities. Thus, a comprehensive public health response to the pandemic must include (a) attention to the psychological aspects of hospitalization for patients, families, and staff affected by COVID-19; (b) planning for emergency and acute psychiatric patient care if hospitals become overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients; and (c) innovations for providing mental health care in communities while social distancing is required and health system resources are strained. Nurses and nurse leaders must anticipate these mental health challenges, assist with preparedness in health systems and communities, and advocate for a coordinated response to promote mental wellness and resilience.” – National Institute of Health
Additionally, according to a study done by the European Pharmaceutical Review, “Long COVID symptoms improved with Neuromodulation. All twenty long-COVID patients who received Neuromodulation treatment reported significant improvements in their symptoms in as little as 14-days.”
Synapse Hawaii Can Help You or Your Loved Ones
Dr. Gregory Yim, a Board-certified Neurologist at the Synapse Brain Treatment Center in Hawaii, offers a state-of-the-art treatment called MeRT, or Magnetic e-resonance therapy. This is a more sophisticated form of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This treatment is proving to be effective against the after-effects of COVID-19 that have been affecting the brain.
MeRT uses TMS to treat patients, however, MeRT is a much more precise treatment since it uses a quantitative EEG to pinpoint exactly in the brain where dysregulation is occurring. Treatment can be targeted to each individual’s brain. This type of neuromodulation alters the neuroplasticity of the brain. Treatment is very safe and has a high success rate. Unlike medications, this treatment works by rewiring the brain’s circuits and pathways.
At Synapse Hawaii, Dr. Yim uses MeRT to treat patients who have after-effects, who are also referred to as “long haulers.” Overall, patients who have received MeRT treatment are noticing drastic improvement in their symptoms.
The COVID-19 virus has been shown to be a cause of inflammation throughout the body and the the brain. Inflammation in the brain has shown to be reduced by MeRT treatment.
How does MeRT differ from Standard TMS?
Every single person’s brain is completely unique to them. You can have two people, who weigh the same, are the same height, and are both in good health, but their brains can operate and react differently to the same set of circumstances including COVID. Your brain is as unique to you as your fingerprints.
What makes MeRT so revolutionary is that MeRT protocols utilize brain wave analysis to identify specific areas of the brain that are not functioning normally or not communicating as they should. Our qEEG identifies exactly where in the brain this is occurring and produces a brain map of sorts to show exactly where treatment needs to be targeted aimed at modulating the brain waves in order to restore healthy brain communication.
The qEEG results lets us know no only what is not functioning properly, but also helps us to determine how the brain SHOULD be operating. We treat this by utilizing a precision treatment using a set of magnets placed on the scalp that causes reorganization of the signals. This stimulates and organizes the neurons and pathways in the brain, which is called neuromodulation.

Getting Started as a New Patient
If you are interested in learning how MeRT might help you specifically, Dr. Yim does offer a free, fifteen-minute consultation to answer your general questions. The next step after that is to get the qEEG completed. Once we get the results back of your qEEG, which includes a brain map, we can show you exactly where in your brain we are seeing brain waves that are out of sync and disrupted, and get you started with treatment.
Our approach is patented and scientific. We use the data gathered through this testing to develop a customized treatment plan that is targeted towards encouraging healthy brain communication and function.
Full treatment duration takes place every day, Monday through Friday, for approximately 6-weeks for optimal and long-lasting results. Treatment sessions only take about 30-minutes each day.
Insurance Coverage
Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance or file it on your behalf. We can provide you with CPT codes and a Super Bill to present to your insurance after treatment to see if you might be eligible for reimbursement. Conditions that have been FDA-cleared for treatment include Major Depressive Disorder and OCD.
On occasion, some individuals have been successful in receiving some reimbursements for EEGs and clinical evaluations, along with other elements for treatment, depending on your insurance.
It has been our experience that Medicare nor Medicaid provide any reimbursement for this treatment. For all other conditions, treatment is currently considered “off label” and insurance will rarely reimburse the costs associated with treatment.
